Miscellaneous Virginia letters [manuscript] 1838-1877.

Two letters from William Fitzgerald to his brother John Fitzgerald, 1838, 1839, concern business in the House of Delegates, his desire to give up his position and attend to his family and property, particularly the necessity of increasing the amount of his lands or reducing the number of his hands. A letter from F. Converse to George W. Richards and The Board of Trustees, Leesburg Academy, 1841, regarding the $200 appropriated per year for the Academy. A letter from McDaniel & McCorkle to iron manufacturer W[illiam] W. Davis, 1844 July 24, transmits a copy of Davis's account noting that they have not been able to make any sale iron but may as the stocks reduce. A letter from Richard P. Walton, 1850 June 25, to Edward [S.?]Brown supports the latter's candidacy for office as a conservative and invites him to come to electioneer in Cumberland County. A letter from Thomas W. Sydnor to his wife Blanche, 1852 January 25, describes a trip by stage from Appomattox Court House to Lynchburg delayed four times by mud which ruined his boots, overshoes, pants and overcoat. Letters to John M. Orr of Leesburg, Va., 1853-1859, include a letter from his ward John Stephenson, 1853 April, concerning his current situation and his desire to go to college and a letter from Willoughby W. Tebbs of the Fauquier School, 1855 December 22, concerning money owed by Orr for Stephenson's education, together with an account for board and tuition. There is also a letter from B. P. Noland, 1859 February 24, about settling an undescribed matter involving a Mr. Lee other than by legal suit. Four letters from Congressman Lewis McKenzie to Orr, 1868-1877, discuss chesnut posts and rails, the end of carpet bag rule in Virginia, purchase of land along railroad lines, legal fees, and a railroad case in the Richmond Circuit Court and the possiblity of an injunction to prevent judgement against the road. A letter from A. T. Forbes to his mother, 1854 May 10, from school at Ridg[e]way, Charlottesville, Va., comments on family news and requests money for a pair of shoes. A letter from G[eorge?] W[illiam?] Beale to John W. Davis, 1855 December, discusses school holidays, Christmas celebrations, his new gun and bird shooting. A letter from S. Carson Bowers, 1859 December 27, inquires if James M. Scheckhise, would answer a call to a Lutheran Church in Rockingham County, Va. A letter from George E. Hamilton to his brother [?]John, 1868 June 12, written from George Town College, writes of end of year examinations and inquires after family, requesting they write. A letter from M. E. Kingsley to Hattie A. Judd of Springfield, Mass., 1869 May 25, requests some worsted, inquires about her teaching resignation, and discusses his future as a teacher at Hampton Institute, noting that the General [Samuel A. Armstrong] is encouraging him to stay but that he is drawn to come home.
